Belarus' minister of natural resources meets with Latvia’s counterpart

Belarus' Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Andrei Khudyk met with Latvia’s Minister for Environmental Protection and Regional Development Kaspars Gerhards met in Minsk on 8 February 2018.

The ministers discussed the promising areas of bilateral cooperation in environmental matters, including a set of measures to implement the cooperation program between the Belarusian Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection and the Ministry for Environmental Protection and Regional Development of Latvia for 2018-2022. The program was signed on 7 February. It provides for the conservation and sustainable use of biological and landscape diversity, water resources, hydrometeorological activities, environmental monitoring, and also research, personnel training and many more.

Andrei Khudyk and Kaspars Gerhards expressed their intent to continue working together to prepare a Belarus-Latvia intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the protection and rational use of transboundary waters, improving their quality, preserving and, if necessary, restoring ecosystems.

The ministers also examined the prospects for cooperation in waste management. Latvia shared its experience in medical waste management.

At the end of the meeting, the parties expressed confidence that fruitful cooperation between the two ministries will continue developing.
